This month I want to reflect on my Sleeping Rocks before I start to paint some new ones for a show this Autumn.
I had been talking about drawing women as rocks for years, always feeling I was just around the corner from making the work but never actually doing it.
And then, I spent a week on my own in deepest, darkest (most delightful) Cornwall - to see what would come out of it. Heavily inspired by Henry Moore’s incredible lithographs of The Henge..

...combined with the monumental solidity of my two favourite drawings by Käthe Kollwitz and Van Gogh, I finally drew a woman sleeping; heavy as a rock.
To make my sleeping rock paintings I began at the beginning : with an Anemone Study. I use these studies to worry through how colours will interact and meld. I then use them to inform the colours for my larger paintings.
I was thrilled that interior designer Charlee Allan-Quinton picked my one of my Sleeping Rock prints as part of her Trade Secrets Curator’s Selection with Partnership Editions and grateful for her words about it...
‘When I saw Sleeping Rock and Sophie’s explanation of the piece as a space for the woman to rest in, it rang true as a woman and a mother. I chose it in the vibrant red and it gives me a sense of energy when I look at it throughout the day, sometimes in moments when I need permission to rest or a little energy lift’

Would you rather?Molly Martin
Would you rather dauphinoise or Jacket potato? I adore dauphinoise! but a good old jacket potato piled with beans, coleslaw and crunchy salad is one of my all time favourite comfort foods!
What recipe do you cook for your loved ones? Macaroni cheese
What do you cook when you’re sick? Marmite pasta. Honestly, it's surprisingly delicious and it's got all the B vitamins you need!
What is Studio Lunch I find lunch a bit of an inconvenience in the studio - so I don't make much time for it! It's always simple and fast. In Autumn / Winter it's usually soup with a hunk of bread. In Spring / Summer it's often pesto pasta or quiche with loads of sauerkraut!
