AUGUST 2024

There are freshly primed boards on the wall, Autumn is around the corner, I’m back in the studio and I'm ready to go!

I have been reflecting on studios; special places where we can relinquish the normal rules of how to arrange space. Things pile and add. Strange arrangements form on the walls and surfaces as an aside to the actual making of the artwork.

But my pride and joy is my bizarre studio kitchen - reminiscent of Mrs Armitage’s bicycle - it has been evolving over time, upwards and outwards, from a sink in the corner.

Artist’s studios have always been interesting to me and I’ve poked my nose into (and drawn) lots over the years. Here are some of my favourites…

Cornelia Parker

Felix McKormac

Roanna Wells

The first studio I ever drew was Francli Craftwear’s in the breezy Fish Factory warehouse in Falmouth. I drew the workshop, as it moved location, several times over a few years and (slightly mortifyingly) the drawings show me finding my feet stylistically.

Would you rather? with Ali Goodman of Francli Craftwear

Would you rather dauphinoise or Jacket potato?
If I have to cook it, jacket potato. If I’m being cooked for, dauphinoise.

What recipe do you cook for your loved ones? A big tray of roasted sweet potatoes with kale. Covered in a dressing of tahini, lemon, mustard and honey. With lots of nuts and lots of herbs. Feta or halloumi on top, I think it comes from an Ottolenghi recipe.

What do you cook when you’re sick? I probably won’t be cooking if I’m sick. I’ll buy a variety of delicious picky bits to have next to the sofa. Grapes, blueberries, carrots, chocolate, humous, crisps etc. Watching films and regularly filling a mug from a big saucepan of hot fresh ginger (brought nearly to boil and simmered for at least 15 minutes to make it super fiery) If I’m really poorly and sad, I’ll ask James for some kind of rich, hot ramen with homemade bone broth.

What is Studio Lunch? My typical studio lunch is a wrap with beans, feta, avocado, rice and greens. Toasted both sides in a griddle pan so the filling is nice and hot.
